Construction of a long distance bike trail
Where
- In Tanzania from Bagamoyo to Kigoma over 1300km
- Along the old slavery trade routes
- Along the railway line built by the Germans last century
Finish
How are we to picture the first long distance bicycle trail in Tanzania? It is completely sign-posted and follows the available trails and roads. There are accommodation possibilities every 50-80 km. These can be existing hotels, but additional accommodation/small hostels need to be established in areas not developed for tourists. The supply and security of tourists should also be guaranteed in those areas, whereby the central railway can play a key role in supply. The history of slavery transport and the main railway line will be displayed in small museums or on suitable information boards along the trail. Information centers, which inform tourists about the area, what is available, and services offered, are to be set-up in cities such as Kigoma, Tabora, Manyoni, Dodoma or Morogoro. A charge similar to the National Park charges will be made for travelling along the bike trail. Accommodation and other services will be calculated separately. The Slavery Bike Trail would be communal property and could be run by an operating society with a binding standard for all the participating concerns. A welcome side effect of long distance trails is that employment is created in areas which have seldom or never been previously visited by tourists. Tanzania supports the recognition of the “East African Slave Route/Bagamayo” as World Heritage by the UNESCO. The Bike Slavery Trail would be an excellent opportunity for tourists from all over the world to get to know this heritage. Indeed this bicycle route, unique for the entire continent, would be a reason for many to travel to Tanzania.
